about

is cylindricon a person, a program, or something else?

A person in a community made up of friends trying to make music for each other to enjoy.

describe where cylindricon comes from. where should it be heard?

Cylindricon is a side project of a side project. Nothing to be taken seriously. One of my regrets is taking life too seriously. This is a serious album from a serious person trying very hard not to take life too seriously.

who are cylindricon’s teachers?

Matt’s music and mostly folk music. No, there isn’t much folk is this album, but I am trying to communicate some kind of story. The challenge is communicating it with little to no words.

does cylindricon watch? does it think? does it move?

Is it possible to make an album worth listening to? What are people listening to these days? What does that mean? Is there value in the album? What does it mean to listen to an album? What does it mean to make an album? Is anyone else out there engaging with today’s music? Is this a closed system? I provide but can’t receive. I can’t seem to hear the people listening in.

what are cylindricon’s intentions? what are its goals?

If one person nods their head to a couple of these beats, then I think I would call this a success.

what is one of cylindricon’s rules?

I have many rules. Rules are important. Without them, it would be almost impossible to be happy with a cohesive sounding album. It’s these rules that I am comparing and contrasting against other songs to make sure they belong together. If I did my job correctly, the listener should be able to intuit the rules, then when rules are broken, they should provide a point of notable consideration. The more rules the better. I find this crucial to a cohesive album. I often think about a four-piece band, and about the rules and limits embraced by their choice of instrumentation. The greatest songs we all enjoy today were put together only by a few instruments and a couple people. I don’t know how this translates to electronic music. But it is something I think about often.

what has cylindricon learned lately? what is it learning now?

Lately, I’ve been learning how to make ideas legible and understandable. If I am trying to communicate an idea, then I should make it clear when possible. However, this is not always possible since I am still learning. But I know the way to clarify an idea is through dialog. Through dialog, an artist is able to see their idea in action. This has been an indispensable tool in the creation of music.
